The bad boys are getting ready to head to Maui for next week’s Alaska Telephone Association Winter Conference. It’s a place where Alaskans like to meet in January! My talk at the conference is titled “Wi-Fi and the Alaska Connection,” and the blurb reads in part “This is a story of how innovation happens, and it shows just how far we’ve come in the world of wireless connectivity.” After the conference, Meg and I will “connect” with Hana, at the end of that winding road on the north side of Maui. The northern lights — or aurora borealis — was a topic in my recent radio interview on KUAC radio in Fairbanks, Alaska, a place where people know all about this amazing light show in the sky. You can see a great photo of the northern lights at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075 and you can find the interview itself (text and audio) at http://fm.kuac.org/post/wi-fi-pioneer-learned-how-handle-radio-bad-boys-while-bringing-telecom-bush

In the past few months, I’ve appeared on quite a number of radio shows, where they’ve asked me to talk about “Wi-Fi and the Bad Boys of Radio.” One of them was the Dr. Sky Show with Steve Kates. You can hear that one at http://teentalknetwork.com/science.htm

Yixin Liu is from Singapore. He was one of the students who visited us in September to describe to Alaskans their work in developing nations. During the visit, they were interviewed by Steve Heimel on KSKA — Anchorage public radio. You can see Yixin being interviewed at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075 And you can listen to the interview at http://www.alaskapublic.org/2012/09/07/student-professionals/

I’ll soon be taking the Bad Boys to Hawaii for a talk in Lahaina, Maui. It will be at the Alaska Telephone Association Winter Conference January 27-30. And what better place for Alaskans to meet up in January? Appropriately, the title of the talk is “Wi-Fi and the Alaska Connection,” and it’s closely related to Chapter 2 of the book, “Wi-Fi and the Bad Boys of Radio.” If you haven’t seen my recent photos, take a look at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075

Not to be outdone by the folks in Fairbanks, the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) has asked me to give a talk about Wi-Fi on Monday November 12 at 1130 am. Sponsored by the IEEE student branch, this talk will be given in the UAA Engineering Building Room 345. I’m looking forward to spending time with the UAA students. And, if you haven’t seen them lately, you might like to check out the photos at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075

On Monday October 29 at 6 pm. I’ll give a talk at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It will be at the Bunnell Building in the Schaible Auditorium. Called “Wi-Fi and the Alaska Connection,” it tells a little about some of Alaska’s radio pioneers. And there’s also a tie to “Wi-Fi and the Bad Boys of Radio.”

The two things I’ve been writing about — Wi-Fi and students doing consulting projects in developing nations — came together last year in Rwanda, where two Carnegie Mellon students worked on designing a Wi-Fi network to be used by orphans of the Rwandan genocide. Alimou Bah and Jin Seop Kim spent last summer helping the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village, a residential school for the orphans, with an array of IT problems, including a Wi-Fi network design. I gave them some advice, but they did all the design work themselves. You can see a photo of the two students making Wi-Fi measurements at
