How students can do all that great work

September 21st, 2012
There’s been lots of interest in the work that Carnegie Mellon students like Kayt, Adrienne, Alimou, Yixin, Hermona and others have done in developing nations around the world.  Two years ago I did a talk at TEDx Homer about the program that allows them to do all that great work.  You can watch the talk at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMzSd_frkpY

WSJ explains Wi-Fi

September 18th, 2012

In today’s (Sep 17) Wall Street Journal, they summarized an interview with me to explain — in a very simplified way — why Wi-Fi is sometimes slow.  A more complete explanation is contained in my “Smart Wi-Fi” article in the October 2005 issue of Scientific American and in “Wi-Fi and the Bad Boys of Radio.”

Here’s the link to the WSJ article:

We missed Kayt, who worked in Ghana

September 18th, 2012
At last week’s events, we missed Kathryn (Kayt) Dickens — now Kathryn McKissick. Kayt worked with Adrienne White in 2008 in Ghana, where they helped Ashesi University establish a new student records system. They made a great team! Kayt is now working in Cape Verde, an island nation off the coast of west Africa, and the trip to Alaska would have been a long one for her.  You can see Kayt’s photo at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075

They are changing the world!

September 14th, 2012

Hermona, Alimou, Adrienne and Yixin will soon finish their visit to Alaska, where they have impressed Alaskans with their devotion to service, their public speaking prowess, and their professional ability.  They gave two public presentations and appeared on a public radio show.  The broadcast is at http://www.alaskapublic.org/2012/09/07/student-professionals/   They, and others like them, really are changing the world.  Take a look at the photo at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075

Student consultants speak in Alaska

September 13th, 2012

Four Carnegie Mellon current and former students traveled to Alaska this week to describe their international work in developing nations.  Yixin Liu, Adrienne White, Alimou Bah and Hermona Tamrat gave presentations at the University of Alaska Anchorage and at the Matanuska Susitna College.  They described their work as professional consultants in Palau, Ghana, Rwanda and Peru, where they worked and provided consulting services to governmental and non-governmental organizations.  The next day they all appeared on the statewide public radio show “Talk of Alaska.”  You can hear the broadcast at http://www.alaskapublic.org/2012/09/07/student-professionals/   And you can see them visiting the University of Alaska (with a professor) at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075

And Hermona worked this past summer in Peru!

September 5th, 2012

Hermona Tamrat worked this past summer in Pucallpa, Peru.  On September 10 she will describe her just completed project.  Hermona is from an Ethiopian family.  She is currently a Carnegie Mellon student and will graduate with  a civil engineering degree in May 2013.  Her photo is at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075

Yixin is from Singapore but worked in Palau

September 5th, 2012

Yixin Liu grew up in Singapore, attended Carnegie Mellon, and worked on a project for the Ministry of Education in the paradise island nation of Palau — a mecca for divers and snorkelers.  Pubic service sometimes has unexpected benefits!  And Yixin will describe them when he speaks on September 10.  You can see his photo at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wi-Fi-and-the-Bad-Boys-of-Radio/275965759083075
